Moving is a logistical nightmare. In order to make it happen, a moving company needs to know how many shipments they have, where they are, where they’re going, how many trucks, trailers, and drivers they have, the available space on each truck or trailer bed, and how to get their drivers some sleep at some point on the road, and the list goes on and on. If they can master the logistics game, shipments arrive on time, drivers don’t exceed their time and mileage limits, and the company’s overall productivity and customer satisfaction both go up. Wins all around!
This is why an in-home survey, performed by a qualified eye, is absolutely crucial! A survey is the first and possibly the most important step in the moving process. This is where someone comes to your home, reviews the route into and out of your neighborhood, determines what packing and storage services you may need, completes a full list of the goods to be moved, and calculates the space and weight of your shipment. If the surveyor is good, they should be able to estimate within a 5-10% margin of error the space required in your moving truck.
This is crucial information for planners and dispatchers. Without this piece of the puzzle, an interstate move planner can’t tell if they will be able to fit that third shipment to Austin on one trailer or if they need to locate another driver for a different trip. Maybe half the goods make it on and the other half languishes in a warehouse for a week before they are able to send it along on another truck. Most everyone wants their items to arrive all at the same time, making accurate survey information extremely important.
If you are moving to the next town over, the stakes are a little lower, but without a survey a dispatcher may not know whether your move can be done with a crew of three or if they should send a fourth. Local moving is billed hourly, with rates determined by the crew size, so this little planning detail could make a significant impact on the total cost to you at the end of the day.
The bottom line is: a survey is a necessary first step for a successful move. At Virgil Moves, we provide a complete, detailed survey at no cost to you. Our value is in being accurate.
